5. Other Business
a. MC Birthday Ball:
• need to begin planning for the ball; Friday, 11/7/08 was agreed upon as the target date.
• Will be a coordinated event with the Montford Point Retired Marines, a group that honors the first African-American Marines who trained at Montford Point, NC in 1942 (1st Sgt. Landrum is an active member.)
• Agreed to hold at the NAS Officers Club again; Col. and 1st Sgt. contact them for reservations.
• Need to begin fundraising efforts immediately
b. Fundraising
• Carwash: agreed to try a carwash this summer with prepaid ticket sales. Hazel with locate a site and bring info back to the group
• Candy sale: agreed to target the first two weeks of school (other clubs will not be actively fundraising at that point). Suggested having a recruiting table at 9th grade orientation that will include candy sales; should be around 8/14th or 15th; Col. will check with the principal to obtain date and approval.
c. Col. Watson’s update
• Concerned about grades; will continue to encourage parental involvement
• Aviation program is in jeopardy due to the block schedule; current schedule only allows Mr. Leone to see students every two weeks which is insufficient. Col. encourages parents to advocate for regular schedule or 4x4 block (4 classes meeting daily per semester). Agreed that Booster Officers will schedule a meeting with the principal on 6/4 to discuss this and recruiting; Ms. Andrews will schedule meeting.
• Summer training for cadet officers scheduled for August 5, 6 and 7; camping out at the school.
6. Next meeting: Saturday, June 7th from 9:00-10:00.
